new year.

Ned Hayes

Rosh Hashanah comes
      this year
on a day of cool wind,

a breathtaking
portent of winter

taking the world, rude lover

the new fruit, shot through
with decay:

birthed in the same
      moment,
the racing seed and
            the worm.
